About us

Our farm camp offers a hands-on, outdoor experience where children connect with nature through farming, creative art projects, and engaging group activities. Inspired by Waldorf education, we encourage curiosity, imagination, and teamwork in a nurturing environment. Campers will plant, harvest, create, and explore, fostering a deep appreciation for the land and community. Join us for a joyful and immersive experience in the great outdoors!

Hi! I'm Kara Gates, the director and teacher of the Tiny Famers' Camp. A little bit about me is that I’m about to graduate from Cal State San Marcos with a bachelor's degree in child development. I have a lifelong passion for working with children and have dedicated much of my life to helping them grow and thrive.

I was a preschool teacher at Seed School, a unique all-outdoor learning environment where children explore and connect with nature. I have also worked at Oasis Preschool. In addition to being a full-time student, I also coordinate a farm camp, where I guide kids through farming, gardening, playing, and creating art projects.

I am so excited to share experiences with you and your family. I come from a colorful background - A career in accounting, studying the self through yoga and meditation, a musician, an artist, a farmer, and a preschool teacher! I went through my own initiation of becoming a mother in 2017 and in that process I connected with a new version of myself that was never known before. I found a deep desire to return to being playful and I prioritized beginning to feel what it truly was like to be in my body - to be me!

Along the journey I was fortunate to meet a local preschool teacher that allowed me to share yoga practices with the children at her school. We quickly realized that there was so much more I could do with the children when we zoomed out and saw all the tools I have for social emotional development, non-violent communication, embodiment, playfulness and joy! I spent five years under the mentorship of Liberty Winn at Oasis preschool in San Diego. From there I went on to teach at the Seed School in Oceanside for an additional two years. As a certified Yoga Therapist I have completed trainings for Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Grief and more so that I am better equipped to meet the varying needs of those in our community.

I show up with a lot of space and energy to hold whatever comes up during the day. I love to bring in group games that encourage your children to solve issues creatively, to be mindful of their peers, to tune in to their own intuition and to enjoy this time of being a kid. My goal is to help each child trust themselves, to promote awareness on keeping themselves and others safe, to learn how to work with challenging feelings, and to focus on our roles of encouraging community and finding respect for one another and the Earth.

I look forward to meeting your children, honoring them exactly as they are, helping them feel supported in their goals and dreams, and allowing us all to grow together.

See you soon
